~The Stuff that Really Matters~

Hugging? … Go for it! But there are some caveats.
Kurt isn’t a very physical guy by nature and instinct. Most mutants aren’t due to their background, experiences, and powers. However, he’s fine with a good hug from a friend, a hand on the shoulder for comfort, and—once he figures it out—a handshake or high five in congratulations. He’ll even bear a jump on his back if the person is light enough and warns him first. But if he doesn’t know the person, Nightcrawler avoids getting randomly hugged by a stranger unless they’ve got someone he trusts to vouch for them. Attempts to do so usually get dodged or teleported, the latter especially if it’s a surprise hug. Now, if the circumstances are peaceful and he doesn’t think there’s any threat, a sudden hug will surprise him, but he’ll ultimately let it happen or lightly disentangle himself depending on the person. He does have to make physical contact with others to teleport them with him, so he’s fine with that, as seen plenty of times when he was teleporting his friends around the base and battlefield. Lastly, while Kurt’s not that fond of someone grabbing his tail out of the blue, he’ll tolerate it if there’s nothing malicious to it. When Jubilee caught him by his tail to prevent him from wandering, he was a little miffed, but accepted it with a wry expression. Yanking his tail for a negative reason is going to get a punch or kick, if not a hard yank in return to get the other person in range to strike. If he has a close relationship with someone, he sometimes wraps his tail around their waist or a limb for comfort or affection.

Kissing? … Feel free to try, but his reaction depends on circumstances.
Kissing is something Kurt sees as an intimate action—particularly kissing on the mouth—and something done between people who are either dating or married or otherwise especially intimate with each other. He understands families and some cultures kiss as a greeting (like on the cheek) so that’s okay. But up and kissing him out of nowhere is going to shock him. If it’s someone he knows, he’ll be getting flustered and red-faced, followed by a stammered question. If it’s someone he doesn’t know, he’s going to backpedal very quickly and either question them or outright vanish to get away. Kissing in public is making a ā€œwe’re togetherā€ statement to people around you, in his mindset, and thus not something you just do casually. Plus, Nightcrawler thinks most people would be very averse to kissing him due to his mutations, so the sheer action of it would be a big surprise to him. If he’s in a relationship with someone, however, kissing is fine, and he can be quite a charming kisser. But he still prefers to keep that in more private settings, not so much out of embarrassment, but more out of respect.

Flirting? … You’re welcome to, but his reaction depends on circumstances.
Unlike his comic counterpart, Kurt isn’t as much charmer or a flirt. At his age and experience, he’s still getting used to adjusting to a new life with new friends, experiences, and responsibilities. He recognizes flirting without a problem and once he gets past his shyness, Nightcrawler can flirt back quite well if he wants to. But again, flirting, like kissing, means something, and he would never want to hurt someone’s feelings by leading them on. He’s more likely to give honest compliments rather than flirts. Just up and tossing pickup lines at him is going to either embarrass him or startle him (because wow, forward). Overenthusiastic or overaggressive flirting makes him awkward or irritated enough to retreat, and ā€œcheesyā€ one-liners run the risk of getting a flat reaction or going right over his head. Depending on place, setting, character, and attitude, he’ll either try to ignore a flirt or accept it as a compliment rather than the ā€œI’m interested in youā€ sort of deal. Of course, if he’s also interested and gotten over his timidity, then expect to get something charming back. The closer he gets to someone, the easier it is to flirt with him and more readily he’ll respond.

Fighting? … If you want to, sure, but he has reservations against it.
Kurt is very much a pacifist and avoids fighting as much as possible. If he can, he’ll try to talk his way out of a fight and resolve differences with words rather than violence, though he dislikes when things turn into heated argument rather than civil discussion. If the disagreement ends up becoming irreconcilable, then he’ll leave instead of lash out, even teleporting to escape if the other person doesn’t intend to let him walk away. However, trapping him or forcing him to fight (usually to defend himself or protect someone he cares about) will end up with Nightcrawler showing an aggressive and surprisingly-talented ability for fighting. Due to his expertise in teleportation, martial arts, strength, flexibility, acrobatics, reflexes, and physical advantages, Kurt is a very dangerous opponent, especially when cornered or enraged, and he can fight with the best of them. Because of his gentle nature, however, if he fights, he’ll attempt to incapacitate his opponent as fast and non-lethality as possible, even if that means constraining them with the surroundings or dangling them from a high vantage point and waiting for them to give up on their aggression. Now training or sparring with teammates or friends is something Nightcrawler accepts, since it’s necessary to keep himself in top shape, but he’ll still suggest doing something like going to the mall instead, especially if this fight is just a way to ā€œhang outā€ rather than duty.

Injuring? … Minor wounds are fine; message for major wounds.
For minor wounds, feel free to assume it’s fair game to happen; you don’t need a message for it. But for the major ones, please send a message first to discuss it before really hurting him. Please don’t maim my precious blueberry. Being a mutant and an X-Man, Kurt isn’t a stranger to injury. As with fighting, he doesn’t like injuring or seeing injury happen to anyone. However, he knows violence happens and has suffered in the past from altercations. Minor injuries like scrapes, scratches, bruises, and cuts aren’t going to stop him for very long and he’ll weather through superficial wounds if it means protecting someone or completing his mission. Major injuries like impalement, broken bones, amputations, and internal ruptures, however, are going to take him down unless it’s a do-or-die matter. Despite his mutation, Nightcrawler heals like a normal human and needs medical attention and rest to recover. Notably, he does have a superior resilience when it comes to injury; he was shot in the arm and repeatedly electrocuted and still put up a victorious fight against his opponent.

Killing? … Highly unlikely, unless it’s planned on and discussed beforehand.
If death is something planned on, send a message first to discuss it before going forward. It’s unlikely to happen, but not out of the question, especially since comic book deaths are a thing even in movies…. Similar to injuring, being a mutant and X-Man, Kurt knows death and killing. Both from the prejudice and fear towards mutants and the angry revenge mutants take against their oppressors. Because of his religion and his gentle nature, he hates the thought of someone having to die and is extremely against having to kill anyone. He’s never taken a life in his life before and will do everything in his power to avoid anyone having to die. However, if it comes down to him or the person he’s protecting, Nightcrawler will sacrifice himself to save them. He was willing to teleport his entire team out of a certain death situation despite the unknown cost to himself (which ended up knocking him unconscious for a long time afterwards), showing the strength of his determination despite not knowing the cost.

Mind Reading? … Go for it; he’s ā€œused toā€ it, but would prefer they get his permission first.
In a world of mutants, telepathy is one of the more common powers and Kurt is no stranger to it. Two of his close friends, Jean Grey and Charles Xavier, are very powerful telepaths and he’s seen their abilities first hand. However, even though he’s a very friendly guy, Nightcrawler has his privacy like everyone else. If his mind’s going to be read, he’d prefer the telepath to get his permission first before they go diving into his mind. If he realizes someone’s probing around in his mind without his permission, he’s not going to be very happy with that and he’ll ask the person to stop if he can. If the invasion is sudden or the offender won’t get out of his head, Kurt will teleport to throw them off. Special note to telepaths: If he teleports, any mental connection to his mind is severed. Even Professor X stressed he was unable to keep a lock on Nightcrawler while he kept teleporting. Once he reappears, mental links can be reestablished after relocating him. Provided he doesn’t teleport again. As for what’s in his head, while Kurt has a lot of good memories, prepare for some drama/trauma and harder things to handle because X-Men isn’t a very ā€œhappyā€ world compared to some of the other superhero series.

Warnings? … None really from him, but his world has some.
Nightcrawler is a very friendly and nice guy and tries his best to avoid any kind of conflict. While there’s little to fear from him, his ā€œangel marksā€ (religious cutting and scarring as penance) may trigger some people, particularly since they’re obviously not hidden, and Kurt won’t not talk about them if he’s asked. However, he considers these marks a personal element and is gentle and humble when discussing them. His world might cause some triggering scenarios if it comes up in conversations, events, or memories. The divided world the X-Men live in deals with a lot of mature themes including: intense bigotry and racism (language included), prejudice-driven violence and abuse, forced and illegal experimentations and injustices (including torture), vicious uprisings and revenge against oppressors, gross misuse of power both political and superhuman, genocidal ideas and actions, civil wars and death. Kurt won’t dive into these topics since he doesn’t like to dwell on the bad parts of life, but they are there and can come up.

Non-Human Beings? … He’s generally fine with relationships with non-human beings!
Nightcrawler’s world features a host of other lifeforms beyond humans. Mutants are the most prominent ā€œotherā€ race, but there are instances of aliens, machines, divine beings, and other non-human beings that feature. These range anywhere from humanoid to looking nothing at all like a human. Most of them possess intelligent sentience, able to interact with, communicate with, and respond to humans and mutants alike. Due to his mutations, religion, and lifetime of persecution and racism, Kurt is very open with interaction, communication, and bonding with beings outside of humans and mutants. After all, if he can’t accept another person for who they are, how can he expect others to accept him? He’s not one to show any short of rejection on another being for their appearances or abilities. (Some exceptions apply, such as invading parasites that want to kill everyone before moving onto another planet for no reason other than hunger, or a race or group in the past that has continually wanted to enslave humanity, for example.) These kinds of bonds include teammates, friendships, brotherhoods, AU relatives/families, intimate and sexual relationships, and all the others. Interspecies and interracial relationships can easily happen with him and he won't have an issue getting intimate with alien species or anthropomorphic creatures if/when sex happens (of course, that’s once the relationship progresses that way and he’s comfortable getting intimate). So don’t fear reaching out to him if you happen to look different or have strange powers or anything else.

ā€œI’m blue.ā€
~ Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler)

He put it best. Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler) is a teenage mutant, but unlike many other mutants, his mutation affected him physically: he looks like a blue demon. Obvious as day. Kurt was born with dark blue skin with an almost-velvet sheen to it and rich black hair and eyebrows. His coloring enables him to melt in and out of deep shadows with ease and makes it almost impossible to see him in the dark with unaided eyes. Unlike his comic counterpart, he lacks that very fine blue-black fur covering his body. He has rather striking amber/orange eyes: they fade to an olive color around his pupils and his irises are rimmed with red. Nightcrawler also has pronounced, fang-like canine teeth and pointed, elf-like ears, accenting his ā€œdemonicā€ features. Combine those with his shadow-blending skin and he can unintentionally give people a start when they first see him (or a jump-scare if he approaches from the shadows). But his mutations don’t stop with just his face.

Instead of the normal four-fingers-plus-thumb combo on his hands, Kurt only has two fingers with an opposable thumb on each hand. His fingers and thumb are noticeably thicker and longer than a normal human’s, each tipped with a sharp claw-like nail. Similarly, he only has two toes on each foot, each one much longer than a normal human being’s and tipped with another claw-like nail. While held together, his toes give his feet a cloven-hoof-like appearance, but both are as dexterous as his fingers. Again, unlike his comic counterpart, he lacks a third toe-like projection on his heel. Finally, Nightcrawler has a long (approx. 4 ft (1.2 m)), prehensile tail extending from the base of his spine. His tail’s a little thicker than his wrist where it connects to his body and tapers to a width a little over half that down the length. It’s smooth on the underside, but has a ridged, armored texture on its upper half, and ends in a large, arrowhead-shaped tip. Some call it a ā€˜talon’ or ā€˜stinger’ or ā€˜spade’ but that’s mostly semantics. His tail is as strong and maneuverable as his other limbs and can support his weight regardless of whether he’s leaning on it or hanging from it.

However, for all Nightcrawler’s mutations, he’s still a teenager and, like most humans, has his own fashion, from his hairstyle to his clothes. Kurt keeps his hair in an interesting two-part style. The front half of his top flows forward into long bangs, which sweep across his forehead and curve over the right side of his face. Since they hang about level with his mouth, his bangs sometimes hide his right eye. This wave of hair is streaked with blue (which may or may not be natural, considering, you know, mutant), and while very stylish, admittedly gives him a bit of an ā€œemoā€ look. The rest of his hair is a medium-length mixture of spikey, scruffy, and messy that suggests both bad-boy grunge and fluffy bedhead. The contrast between his styled front and wild back gives Kurt a sense of mystery, cool, ruffled, and fun simultaneously.

Speaking of mystery, anyone looking at Kurt will notice he has several markings all over his face and hands. At first glance, they look like tattoos, but a closer look reveals them as scars. These scars are ancient Enochian symbols, considered to be an angelic alphabet, and have semblances to symbols found in Celtic and Catholic imagery, including crosses, swirls, knots, curves, and points. As a devout Catholic, Nightcrawler practices the sacrament of ā€œpenanceā€ and his method of observing this is by ritualistically carving these marks into his body as a form of payment for sins. He calls these self-inflicted markings ā€œangel marksā€ though it’s not clear what kind of sins, or even whose sins, he’s paying for. These marks, while mostly visible on his face and hands, cover his entire body. They are not randomly inflicted, however; each mark is clearly a part of whatever design he’s making to evoke an image, feeling, or idea. Kurt does take prompt care of the cuts after making them, so don’t expect to see bleeding lines all over him. This is his take on a specific ritualistic act of his religion, not a psychopathic slashing.

Because he lived most of his life performing in a circus and training in martial arts, Nightcrawler has a very trim, athletic physique. While he’s obviously toned with significant muscle definition, his broad shoulders and long arms and legs put him on the slender-almost-willowy side. He’s also tall as hell for his age, standing anywhere from an inch or a few over most of his fellow teammates and classmates (and they’re wearing shoes), though a few outsize him in height and many exceed him in bulk. Over all, Kurt’s streamlined build greatly benefits his flexibility and acrobatic motions. Since he’s begun training with the other X-Men and living in the X-Mansion, he’s starting to develop physically a little more thanks to the practice programs and getting regular meals.

Clothing-wise, Kurt bounces back and forth between casual clothes and his X-Man outfit. Casually, he prefers to wear long-sleeved, collared clothing, such as jackets, sweaters, button-up shirts, and polos, over t-shirts (and boy did he have an amazing shirt in the movie). Whether he leaves the collar up or down is dependent on how he feels at the time, but he generally veers towards collar up and tends to leave his outer-most clothing open to show the shirt underneath. His wardrobe often plays with blacks, reds, grays, and whites, though he avoids dark blues and yellows due to already having those colors associated with him via his skin and eyes.

He’s less stylish with his pants, sticking with a similar pair of tan-hued slacks or brown trousers that end above his ankles. Belts are a preference thing, but all his pants obviously have a hole for his tail to go through as the alternative is highly uncomfortable. Unfortunately for Kurt, the shape of his feet and toes prevent him from wearing shoes, leaving him to go barefoot most of his life outside of custom footwear. Because of this, he has a great longing for the simple comforts of sneakers, as he’s seen staring in utter amazement at a wall full of the shoes in the mall.

His X-Man uniform has gone through two versions. His initial uniform was a military flight suit, consisting of an olive-and-black colored jumpsuit and pants covered with dark a d gray armor. Nightcrawler’s armor was akin to the rest of his team, consisting of guards on is arms, shoulders, chest, back, sides of his thighs, knees, and shins, and held securely in place with cloth-covered metal buckles and straps. Due to the nature of their battles, Nightcrawler’s uniform purposefully gave him as much ease of motion in his joints and limbs as possible, letting him use his acrobatics and fighting skills without being constrained by his armor.

His second uniform calls back to his comic counterpart’s classic costume. He wears a high-collared, vest-like body armor on his upper half, colored in a gray and crimson stylized V, and completed with small extensions over his shoulders. Kurt augments this with a close-fitting, dark bodysuit with built-in shoulder guards and white forearm bracers. Around his waist, he wears a belt with the famous X-symbol buckle and below that, dark, reinforced pants, armored with black kneepads and white-and-black, shin guards. Again, his uniform provides him as much protection as possible without compromising his natural flexibility and athletic movements.

Personality

š“—š“²š“¼š“½š“øš“»š”‚
"Tomorrow, mankind will know that mutants exist.
They will fear us, and that fear will turn to hatred."

Kurt Wagner grew up in a world divided between humans and mutants.

The originator of the above quote, Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto), wasn’t lying or exaggerating in the slightest. Mutants (Homo superior) are humans who possess the X-Gene, a genetic biological factor causing them to be born with and/or develop superhuman powers, traits, and abilities. This X-Gene was caused by saltation (ā€œan abrupt evolutionary change; sudden large-scale mutationā€), which was thought to have been further accelerated into a proper species by humanity’s Nuclear Age.

Some mutants are born with physical mutations no humans possess, such as animalistic traits (skin, eyes, claws) and inhuman characteristics (different bodily compositions). These mutants often can’t hide their mutations without taking great pains or efforts, including self-imposed seclusion, self-mutilation, medical operations, and even technological or magical disguises. Many other mutants are born resembling humans in every way save for their extraordinary abilities, which can range from physical to psychic to psionic-based abilities.

While all mutants are born with their respective powers, their physical mutations and/or their mutant abilities usually manifest at puberty, often at times of great stress. The mutant gene’s attributes cannot always be controlled by the mutant in question, and some cannot control their powers properly or at all, especially if their mutation affects their appearance.

Originally rare and unknown, by the time of World War II (1940s), mutants had become a more widespread phenomenon, though humanity at large continued to be ignorant of their existence. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the existence of mutant-kind was revealed to the world during the Cuban Missile Crisis, when two opposing mutant teams fought each other over an orchestration to destroy baseline humans so that mutants could rule the Earth. The nuclear war, which would have caused the extinction of humanity and the mutant gene to become truly dominant on the planet, was prevented, however, the actions of both teams ultimately exposed mutants to the world in irrevocable ways.

The world was split between the majority who feared and hated mutants and the minority who sought peaceful coexistence and understanding between human and mutant. Mutants became a persecuted species and were hunted down, captured, displaced, forced into hiding, exterminated, tortured, enslaved, experimented upon, and used. Though rare and often quiet, there were others who offered protection and aid to mutants, as well as extended friendship and trust. And still others who simply accepted mutants existed and/or ignored them without taking either side.

Even the mutant society itself divided into factions, with some wanting to fight back and eradicate humanity for their hatred of them or their weakness compared to them, some wanting to protect humanity and learn to coexist with humans, some preferring to remaining in hiding and avoid the war as much as possible, and the rare case where some mutants happened to live in a place the war didn’t touch. Still, the majority fell to the bigoted side, leaving mutants oppressed and often fighting for their lives. This culture war would leak and pervade all parts of life, from media to politics to society. Either for or against, peace or war, life or death.

This is the world Kurt Wagner was born into.

Little is known about his background, save that he was working in a Munich circus before he was captured and that he’s a devout, practicing Catholic. Assumedly, like his comic counterpart, Kurt was abandoned at birth by his mother due to her disgust and exposure at having a mutant child. Left to die, he was found and rescued by a gypsy couple working in the circus; though the couple never officially adopted him, the circus and its members became Nightcrawler’s family.

Growing up in the circus surrounded by performers and ā€œfreaksā€ within the show, Kurt’s mutation hardly bothered any of his surrogate family and the circus audience merely assumed he was a young man in a demon costume/make up. Because of this, he managed to personally escape some of the mutant persecution going on in the world around him so long as he stayed within the confines of the circus. However, the young Nightcrawler knew a lot about the hardships, discrimination, and distrust mutants faced every day and unfortunately, due to some traumatic instances outside the circus, experienced enough of it himself to affect his perception of humans and shape his reactions.

š“ š“š“²š“¬š“® š“‘š“µš“¾š“® š“”š“µš“Æ
"It’s my first time in America; I am very excited to see your culture."

Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler) is a very friendly young man. He generally shuns the notion of avoiding people, or at least people he assumes or knows aren’t going to hurt him, and is quite eager to meet new people, make new acquaintances, and interact with others. While growing up in the circus provided him protection, it hedged the young mutant in and prevented him from being able to make any real bonds outside his surrogate family. After all, audiences never stuck around, and everyone who saw him assumed Nightcrawler was just an actor in costume.

After Raven rescues him and brings him to the X-Mansion, Kurt can only resist being quiet for so long before he interjects in Hank and Raven’s reunion to introduce himself with a grin and a wave. He was waiting for Raven to introduce him, but eventually eagerness prevailed. Later, Jubilee takes him on a tour of his new home and he quickly engages in conversation with her, getting along well with his new friend and discussing his amazement at being in American. Later he gets introduced to Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey and quickly jumps at the chance to hang out with them.

However, sometimes Nightcrawler’s friendly nature can lead to him being dismissed when trying to announce himself, particularly when he tries to do so during more important or pressing moments. In the same scene when he introduces himself to Hank, he still interrupts the conversation, leading to Hank to give him a surprised look and Raven to wryly indicate the newly-arrived mutant’s introduction to her past teammate (after which the two of them quickly shuck Nightcrawler off to Jubilee for his tour).

Again, when Raven and he depart from Caliban’s underground broker headquarters, he tries to tell her his name, starting emphatically, but when she ignores him, he ends up fading and just mumbling the rest while following her. Because of this, Kurt can at times come across as soft spoken when he talks, hardly showing any kind of rudeness or force in his words, but that does make it a somewhat easier to talk him down. Poor guy has a little ā€œtime and placeā€ issue.

Going hand and hand with his friendliness, Nightcrawler’s also a very polite and kind young man. Even though he interjects himself in Hank and Raven’s conversation, he only does so when there’s a long silence, not breaking into either of them talking. And since their talk was veering towards something somber, he amusingly sticks his introduction in to try and lighten the mood back up. At least he halfway succeeds in his attempt… Kurt’s not one to suffer a sad mood for too long if he can help it, even smiling when he was getting his picture taken for his passport (which is presumably of the underground smuggling sort). When he and the other younger X-Men were heading to fight Apocalypse and his horsemen, they were obviously scared (Jean Grey even admitted it and the other’s agreed). But when Quicksilver cracked a joke after Raven’s words, Kurt broke into a smile with the rest, relieved and comforted by the comradeship between his new friends.

His kindness filters into his interaction with other students, such as agreeing to go on a spontaneous mall trip with his new friends, not rising to Scott’s jaded comments about the X-Mansion or being offended when the other mutant referred to him as ā€œthis blue guyā€ afterwards and encouraging Raven when she didn’t believe herself to be a hero. He instantly drums up a conversation with Jubilee after meeting her and is very verbose in his explanations comparing his past with his present (to which she’s both impressed and a bit disturbed at Kurt’s admittedly-bleaker past). He even shows compassion for his enemies, not wanting to get into a fight with Angel and only trying to escape his captors instead of lashing out at them. Though he understands the hardships and experienced the antimutant bigotry and persecution, he still opts to protect humanity and agrees with Professor X’s dream of peaceful co-existence between humans and mutants, something he’ll fight hard to see accomplished.

"Something’s wrong!"
"It’s called a brain freeze."
"VAT?! I froze my brain?!"
"Yeah."

Kurt’s background fuels a mixture of amazement and excitement for getting to experience new things. Good things, in the positive sense, of course. He didn’t grow up in a very well-to-do environment, and his experiences in Germany were not always pleasant. As Jubilee gave him his tour and explained some of the daily functions of the school, he was utterly astounded by what he saw and expressed particular surpriseā€”ā€œThey feed you here?ā€ā€”that the students got meals at the school. He’s used to—and expecting—having to wait for hours in line for a loaf of bread (something which was not a pleasant experience for an obvious mutant surrounded by humans). This comparison gave Jubilee a bit of a reality check, but Kurt didn’t dwell on it and just plowed ahead, excitedly mentioning this was his first time in American and how eager he was to learn about American culture.

There’s something important to realize about Nightcrawler’s background. He grew up in post-World-War-II Germany between the 1960s and 1980s, when the war-torn nation was both recovering from the toll of her war wounds and facing the consequences (and reputation) for her actions. The Reconstruction of Germany was a long process, and included a struggling economy, damaged cities, prejudice from the rest of the world, population swells and scatterings due to lost territory, forced labor and unemployment, black markets, a low standard of living, and people trying to escape from all that toll. Though Germany was improving in all areas by the time Kurt was born, the nation he grew up in was still recovering. Now add onto that the extra burden of mutant persecution and you have a rough childhood for a mutant to grow up in.

Across the ocean, America emerged from the war as a massive superpower in the world and Kurt, like many Germans, would have seen America as a danger to fear and respect, but more importantly, a dreamland that offered protection, stability and comfort for the suffering. When Raven secured papers and passage for him to come to America, something she said was truly part of saving his life, the young teleporter showed tender enjoyment at seeing his photographed face for his passport, knowing he was going to that great nation across the ocean. Once he arrived, being in the fabled country for the first time and experiencing what were complete extravagances and even dreams to him was a major culture shock in the best of ways. It’s not known what his feelings were to the Munich circus he came from, but considering he never once mentioned returning to it, or Germany, or even going ā€œhomeā€ (wherever that was), it’s likely to say he had little to tie him back to the land across the sea.

A big part of Nightcrawler’s character is that he’s rather out of touch and inexperienced with what many countries would consider ā€œmodernā€ luxuries. For example, shortly after his arrival to the X-Mansion, Scott proposed skipping school for a trip to mall, and Kurt, intrigued, asked ā€œWhat’s a mall?ā€ Scott was completely dumbfounded by the new student’s lack of knowledge on modern American culture (no surprise for an American 80s teenager) and proceeded to half-teasingly harp on Nightcrawler’s inexperience until Jean intervened. Kurt wasn’t ruffled, since his curiosity was piqued, and he quickly resolved he wanted to go to try it out.

It’s a good thing he did, because for the first time in his life, he was able to experience normal teen activities (ā€œnormalā€ for Americans in the relative sense, that is) with friends just like him. Kurt was immediately lost in the grandeur of the mall; from riding the escalator to staring at all the shops and wares being sold, the young teleporter likened the mall to a grand temple, never having seen something like it before. He even got mesmerized by an aerobic workout video on a television so much that he drifted away from the group in a trance, at least until Jubilee playfully caught his tail and pulled him back so he would stick with them, something he was a little miffed about, but accepted with a wry face.

Kurt enjoyed himself playing some arcade games (two at once thanks to his tail), watching ā€˜Return of the Jedi’ in a movie theater, entering an impromptu dance contest with a bunch of other teens to their applause, and getting to sample some of the local food. His unfamiliarity with that kind of food, however, ended up with him sucking down an entire slushy at once. And then promptly grabbing his head in pain and freaking out because he instantly thought something was wrong with him. With his friends looking on in amusement, Scott revealed his affliction: a brain freeze, which promptly horrified Kurt, who took it in the literal sense. Yeah, the guy hasn’t experienced anything like America for his entire life, but at least his friends were able to calm him down despite enjoying some humor at his expense.

Due to his inexperience, Nightcrawler can be caught off guard with new technology or places he’s never seen before, take information and explanations very literally, and can be naĆÆve enough to believe what’s told is truth, which puts him at risk of getting tricked or taken advantage of. But due to his friendly nature, he’s not afraid to ask his friends about the new things he discovers and generally takes any teasing he gets for it rather well. Luckily, since coming to live at the X-Mansion, Kurt’s taken rapidly to modern American life and was shown entertaining himself with arcade games, driving in cars, and even browsing the Internet on a handheld device that looked like an iPad. The X-Men have some pretty high-tech stuff for the 1980s (yes, we’re looking at your earbuds, Quicksilver) … Just go with it.

A slightly poignant episode in the otherwise cheery mall visit occurred when Kurt found himself staring in amazement at a wall of sneakers, stunned at the sheer variety of display of something everyone wore so casually, but he himself never had the luxury of owning, both due to his living circumstances and his physical mutations. When a salesman approached him and saw Kurt’s expression and (after a glance down) the reality of the situation, he gave the young mutant a few pats on his shoulder (whether consoling, pitying, or reassuring, take your pick). What Nightcrawler experienced back in Germany was much the opposite, considering his reactions at the mall. Being discriminated against and being unable to live that ā€œnormalā€ life made his upbringing very different and difficult.

Almost all mutants suffer from discrimination, prejudice, hatred, and often violence from normal humans and even other mutants. Kurt, despite his semi-safety in the circus, experienced the same things as the rest of his kind. In a nod to his troubled background, when he was at the mall, Kurt was confused and in disbelief when he noticed that ā€œthey don’t fear us,ā€ with ā€˜they’ being the other human teenagers hanging out in the mall and ā€˜us’ being the mutants. He even receiving a nod in greeting from a passing youth and a ā€˜thumbs up’ from another child later, both actions which surprised him, but made him happy to see. Because of his past, Nightcrawler’s instinctive reaction is to assume humans fear him and are thus a threat. This response runs counter to his friendliness and something he finds himself internally at odds with. He, like many mutants, greatly wishes for a world where such feelings no longer exist, like the mall’s unusual-yet-accepting atmosphere.

"Kurt, can you get us in that thing?"
"You want to get in zere? Vat if the soldiers see us?"
"Don’t worry they won’t see us; trust me."
"… Hold on."

Due to Kurt’s aggregable nature, his friendliness, politeness, kindness, and excitement, hardly anyone dislikes or hates him, and he gets along well with most everyone he meets, bar his explicit enemies. His teammates have all shown ease with talking with him and they put trust in his abilities and comradeship. However, his character goes both good and bad for him. Nightcrawler is very protective of and loving to his friends, does his best to be helpful to them, and is a very brave hero in battle when necessary, willing to put himself on the line to save his companions. However, he’s also vulnerable and timid in the face of aggressive and threatening situations, as he instinctively fears being trapped and is a pacifist who doesn’t want to see conflict.

It’s unknown if Kurt had many—if any—friends back in Germany beyond his circus family. His eagerness to meet new people and quick adaptation to their companionship suggest ā€˜no’ and ā€˜yes’ respectively. Either way, Nightcrawler is very protective the friends he makes and does whatever he can to help them. Soon after meeting Raven, a short, local quake shook the ground and Kurt impulsively moved to shield her, mirroring the other mutant’s protective covering of him at the fight club.

Later, he expressed disappointment that she wouldn’t let him go with her on her missions to help rescue other mutants, but when she required his powers to get home faster, he was quick to help her. When the X-Mansion was attacked by Apocalypse and Hank, Raven, Moria, and Peter were abducted by Stryker, Kurt joined with Scott and Jean to save them. Initially hesitant about boarding the helicopter—after all, he was logically afraid to go towards the soldiers who just assaulted their companions— Nightcrawler ultimately braved up and teleported the three of them aboard.

As Scott, Jean, and Kurt explored Stryker’s base at Alkali Lake, the teleporter tried to help and protect his new friends whenever he could, from teleporting past doors, snooping through various locations in the building, and quickly jumping them to safety once they were discovered and shot at. He had to rely on Scott’s quick thinking and Jean’s telepathy to move through the building and block them from guards respectively, proving himself to be a good teammate right from the start. By the time he found and helped free Raven and the others, Kurt had become embroiled in the war between the X-Men and Apocalypse for the future of humanity. Despite the way mutants had been treated by humans, Nightcrawler chose to protect humanity so that no one else had to suffer. And all this on his first day in America.

He joined the other X-Men and entered the battle with Apocalypse’s Horsemen, showing himself to be a gifted fighter when combating Angel—now the Horseman Death—and an invaluable supporter by locating his friends and teleporting them to safety. Even when they were planning, Nightcrawler vocally refused to abandon Mystique when she told the rest to take off without her and Quicksilver, especially after agreeing with Jean and the others that seeing Raven’s actions on the television when he was younger changed his life forever.

His determination was put to a literal breaking point when Kurt was suddenly faced with having to teleport himself and seven others or die in the crashing jet. Despite his panic over never having teleported that many people before, Nightcrawler valued his friends’ safety over his own, overexerted his limits with an intense effort, and teleported all eight of them out of harm’s way. However, the strain of it drained him entirely and left him unconscious for the remainder of the battle, something that earned him Scott and Jean’s concern and Hank and Moria’s protective guardianship over him while the battle raged nearby.

"Sorry! I’m so--! I’m sorry!"

Despite his bravery during battle and actions for his friends, Kurt’s experiences in the past, combined with his gentle nature, leave him rather timid and vulnerable at times. He greatly despises violence and aggression and does his best to avoid it. After being abducted from his circus home, Nightcrawler was chained up inside a small, electrified box and later forced to compete unwillingly in a mutant cage fight against Angel for the enjoyment of human crowds. He was visibly terrified when thrown from his box, both from the jeering crowds and the oppressive atmosphere shining down on him. Shaking as he got up, Kurt quickly teleported away when Angel attacked him, not wanting to fight. However, since the electrified cage blocked his ability to teleport outside its confines, he ended up repeatedly shocking himself while frantically trying to escape, much to the amusement of the crowd.

Even after this, he continued to dodge Angel’s attacks and teleport rather than fight, though he did start showing fear-driven aggression the more times he ran. It took Angel himself to irritably point out they had to fight or they’d both be killed to finally convince Nightcrawler to attack him. Though he can be frightfully aggressive when he’s forced to, Kurt’s adverse to it and quickly regrets the results. He was able to catch Angel off guard and damage his wing but was clearly shocked then horrified at his actions. When Angel stalked towards him for revenge and Kurt’s momentary hostility vanished, leaving him backing away in terror and apologizing profusely for hurting the winged mutant. When they were finally freed from the cage, both Angel and Nightcrawler fled, but while Angel attacked a few humans in his departure, Kurt teleported around looking for the fastest way out without hurting anyone.

His very fight-or-flight response (heavily emphasized on flight) to aggressive situations renders Nightcrawler prone to panicking when he feels trapped or overwhelmed. This comes from the open discrimination he experienced in Germany, when it wasn’t uncommon for a mutant to be attacked by frightened or angry humans, and he learned to flee rather than fight when confronted. Like his comic counterpart, an instance of human hostility threatening his life is what triggered his ability to teleport for the first time.

Usually when Kurt feels trapped or attacked, he instinctively bolts for wherever feels safer. During his and Angel’s rematch, Nightcrawler was supposed to be looking for Xavier in Apocalypse’s pyramid. However, once Angel accosted him and not only plowed him into the wall, but dodged Kurt’s attack and grabbed his tail, the teleporter panicked and teleported them both back the way he’d come. Despite Jean’s protests, he broke for the security of outside where he knew and could see more and continued the fight with Angel there instead of continuing in the confines of the unknown inside.

Generally, Nightcrawler’s first response to almost anything surprising is to vanish, even if he doesn’t really know what’s attacking him in the first place, probably a result of some trauma when he was younger back in Germany. In a more light-hearted example, when Quicksilver played a prank on Kurt and a group of students in one of the common rooms, the result ended up with apples raining down on the blue mutant from out of nowhere. Freaked, he instantly teleported himself onto the ceiling’s chandelier, anywhere to get away from whatever was pelting him. (And no, he wasn’t too happy about finding out the reason for it either, though he calmed down quickly enough.) Similarly, though he teleported them into the helicopter at Scott’s request, once the doors shut and locked them in, Kurt was distraught at realizing he couldn’t teleport his friends back out through the fields. Because of this, he sometimes comes across as ā€œjumpyā€ to his friends when sudden things happen, though he’s usually quick to forgive them if they prank him for it.

Nightcrawler can be a little anxious about things he thinks are dangerous or unwise or even unknown and will question the matter. When Scott wanted him to teleport them into the helicopter full of soldiers who just knocked out and were taking their friends away, Kurt questioned him on the action (since it was admittedly illogical), then faltered before finally agreeing. He, like the other younger X-Men, was scared as the team flew to face Apocalypse, taking relief in Raven’s encouragement and Peter’s humor. Similarly, when he was at the mall, Kurt hesitated to both get on and step off the escalator since he’d never seen this moving metal staircase before.

Also, despite his enthusiasm at going to the mall, Kurt’s awed scanning around was mixed with some apprehension at being in such close proximity with a bunch of humans. This anxiety sometimes feeds into his manners when he fails or surprises someone, such as when he apologized to his friends for not being able to teleport through one of the military doors and then did the same when he teleported into the group and surprised Quicksilver (though this could also just Nightcrawler being polite, so take your pick). Again, after injuring Angel during the cage fight, Kurt was the one blurting out apologies, so it’s pretty clear he doesn’t like to make people upset and tries to placate things quickly before they can escalate.

"Sorry, Storm. I’m saving those for a rainy day."

All this might make Kurt out to be a ā€œgoody-goodyā€ of sorts, and admittedly he is for the most part. A lot of people even describe him as ā€œinnocentā€ due to his inexperience and friendly kindness. He tries to get along with people, follow the rules, and not make waves. Unlike to his prank-and-adventure-loving comic counterpart, Nightcrawler’s not much of a trickster and prefers to stay where it’s calm. However, he’s all for trying new things and having fun, seen when he agreed to go on the mall trip and the eager amazement he expressed during his tour of the X-Mansion. Plus, he’s not such an angel that he won’t break some rules.

Though Jean expressed misgivings about skipping school to go on Scott’s impromptu mall trip, even all-but-saying that kind of thing was against school rules right in front of Kurt, not only did he agree to go to the mall, but he also provided the encouragement Jean needed to agree to do so as well (and since Professor Xavier wasn’t there and everything was ā€œfine,ā€ it was a perfect opportunity). Not to mention the wartime rule breaking, like infiltrating a military base, releasing one of the facility’s mutant experiments, technically stealing military flight suits and commandeering a fighter jet. But those were very ā€œends justify the meansā€ for multiple reasons, so Nightcrawler had nothing to say against the actions.

When he isn’t being put in danger or fighting to save the world, Kurt shows a calmer side when he’s hanging out at the X-Mansion. Left to his own devices, it’s not uncommon to find him curled up in a chair and browsing the Internet on a handheld or reading a book with a warm drink while lounging on a couch. Sometimes he’ll scoot off to find a place he can rest and relax alone, and other times he’ll find comfort in the company of others, even if it does get a kind of noisy with a bunch of teenagers and electronics hanging out in the same room all doing different things. Still, he greatly enjoying spending time with his new friends and doing normal high school kid things, like playing games, competing in sports, practicing new hobbies, doing homework, studying for tests, having meals together, and talking about new American novelties he’s curious or excited about.

Sometimes, his naivety and jumpy nature can get the better of him, leading to his confusion or surprise when other students tease him or play pranks. The occasional encouragement can get him to join in, but normally Kurt prefers to keep to the friendly side of things and not really antagonize anyone. While he’s quick to forgive his friends for any shenanigans, Nightcrawler’s not above irritation when a joke goes too far. When Quicksilver interfered with the electronics in a roomful of students (to impress a lady friend), he found his image gallery replaced by a mischievous selfie of Peter, among the rest of the benign mayhem settling around the room. This promptly earned a fierce glare and angry snarl from the irked teleporter, before he resignedly accepted the fact with a shake of his head.

While Kurt is kindhearted and soft-spoken, he’s got a cheeky side to him. At the mall’s arcade, he enjoyed himself playing two games at once, trying his hand at one cabinet game while using his tail to drive a racer next to it, and looked pretty happy with himself for doing so. Later at the X-Mansion, Ororo asked for some of the snack he was enjoying, but Nightcrawler apologized and declined, cheekily saying he was saving it for ā€œa rainy day.ā€ Unfortunately, the excuse ended up biting him in the rear when Storm cheeked right back by creating a literal rainy day directly atop of him. Forgot who you were talking to, did you, Kurt? Sufficiently one-upped (and soaked), the young teleporter sulked in the deluge (even sarcastically using his book as an impromptu umbrella) but surrendered his food to make good on his word.

Due to his time at the circus and the scheduling revolving around training and shows, Nightcrawler developed an affinity for catnaps to replenish his energy and get away from some of the unpleasantries of showbiz life. Thus, other students occasionally find him snoozing in some of the strangest places, like curtained in a bay window or stretched out atop a bookshelf. Though he has his own room, Kurt usually only spends time in it when he’s sleeping at night, observing some personal aspects of his religion, or has to study and can’t find a quiet place elsewhere. Otherwise, he likes staying out in the school and being with the other students.

"Oh dear Father. Hold me in the light of God.
Protect me from danger. Save me by Your command.
Listen to my prayer. And keep me safe."

Among his more ironic character traits, Nightcrawler is an extremely religious young man. Whether he was protected by a priest or found refuge in a church is unknown, but he became a devout Catholic at some point during his youth in Germany. Kurt isn’t shy about his religion and is vocal about his faith. When he and the other X-Men were trapped in the helicopter with their kidnapped friends, Nightcrawler unashamedly prayed to God, asking Him to watch over and protect them during their trials.

While he doesn’t overbearingly attempt to convert others to his faith, he likewise doesn’t appreciate others trying to undermine or insult his faith. Unfortunately, his demonic appearance and the anti-mutant attitude obviously make it very difficult for him to attend Mass, so he usually attends in secret. Catholicism also seeps into his hobbies, as he enjoys looking up galleries of Gothic churches for their architecture, atmosphere, beauty, and religious representations, and listening to related music, such as Gregorian chants and Medieval choir worship.

Kurt’s outspoken practice comes from his willingness to pray for his friends, others, and even his enemies, not hesitating to tell them he will do so in hopes that God will ultimately help them and bring them to Him. He frequently attributes the reasons for his actions and decisions to God and his faith, and he doesn’t pretend to know God’s ultimate plan for allowing mutants and humans to suffer (a point he’s understandably attacked on by others who are angered and hurting).

His faith is the deep-seeded reason for his pacifism and forgiveness of others. Despite all the atrocities and discrimination humanity has inflicted upon mutants, Nightcrawler still hopes to see them peacefully co-exist one day and fights to protect them, recognizing they are all children of God despite their differences. Even though he has his own fear towards humans, he explains his view of how faith is a better source of strength than fear or anger and commonly prays for forgiveness for others as well as himself. Because of his religion, Kurt is staunchly against violence despite having an ironic talent for it. He dislikes fighting and usually only resorts to it when he’s forced to do so to defend himself or protect someone or something important.

He believes bigoted humans are unfortunate not to understand what they see with their eyes and normally attests that humans are afraid of what they don’t understand, expressing pity rather than anger for those who hate mutants. Similarly, he is horrified by brutality, seen when he came across a room full of bloodied bodies. Disturbed and hurt by the sight, Kurt briefly covered his mouth and froze at the door, but upon recovering from his shock, he took a moment to respect the dead and crossed himself while silently praying for them and their families.

As a Catholic, Nightcrawler practices the sacrament of ā€œpenanceā€ – a physical action to show devotion to God, express sorrow for his sins, and ask for forgiveness for them. His method of atonement involves ritualistically carving marks onto his body as a form of payment for sins. Kurt calls these self-inflicted markings ā€œangel marks,ā€ though it’s not clear what kind of sins, or even whose sins, he’s paying for. These marks, while visible on his face and hands, cover his entire body. He doesn’t inflict these marks randomly; each mark is clearly part of whatever design he’s making to evoke an image, feeling, or idea.

He takes prompt care of the cuts after making them, as the actions are meant to be an act of love, not meted out as punishment in the negative sense. He performs this ritualistic act of his religion in private, since such things are to be humble rather than flamboyant despite the scars that they leave behind. He also understands his friends’ reactions might be discomforted if they saw him during the ritual and thus respects their feelings by keeping the activity in closed quarters.

Because he believes that God’s intentions are ultimately for good and all people, even mutants were created by Him, Kurt doesn’t see himself or other mutants as freaks, monsters, or other negative lights. Though he understands why humans dislike mutants and has faced difficulties in his life due to his mutations, he displays pride in his mutation. Particularly seen when Hank and Raven were noticing each other were ā€œnot blueā€ (both mutants’ natural states are blue-furred/skinned respectively), and Nightcrawler promptly leaned in and announced that he is blue. Hank was taking a serum to counteract his mutation’s blue side effects while Raven was voluntarily avoiding appearing in her natural blue state, neither of which Kurt had access or ability to utilize, and yet he was just as happy in his blue form and didn’t express distaste for himself.

Similarly, Kurt shows pride in his names, both the given name his surrogate parents gave him and his codename the circus gave him; when Raven called him ā€œCrawler,ā€ the young teleporter promptly protested, reiterating his codename was ā€œNightcrawlerā€ and then pointing out his real name was ā€œKurt Wagner.ā€ Still, he ends up with a few other nicknames from his friends, including the aforementioned ā€œCrawler,ā€ which he ultimately accepts with a wry-but-good-natured smile.

"QUOTE"

Kurt is a mutant who was born with superhuman powers. These powers manifested though his mutant genes when he entered puberty, triggered by a traumatic event where his life was threatened by an angry mob. Since manifesting his powers, Nightcrawler has practiced and trained with them repeatedly during his life and he’s quite skilled at using them. However, since he doesn’t like fighting, he usually only makes use of his powers for self-defense and protecting his friends and loved ones. Of course, he also uses them for leisure when he’s not being an X-Man, both because it’s fun and he likes to keep his powers in prime condition. Kurt’s primary mutant powers are teleportation, spatial awareness, and invisibility in deep shadows.

• Teleportation

The main power he’s known for, Kurt can ā€œpsionicallyā€ teleport himself, his clothing, and a certain amount of additional mass in contact with him across great distances from one point to another virtually instantaneously. Although he controls his teleportation ability with his conscious mind, his power to teleport is not literally psionic; rather it is the result of an unknown biochemical/biophysical reaction which he triggers mentally. When he teleports, or ā€œjumpsā€, Kurt displaces himself briefly through an alternate dimension and then reappears from it in a consciously pre-determined location. As he travels through this dimension, he guides himself via a subconscious, natural direction-finding sense.

Kurt’s teleportation speed is near instantaneous, sometimes being so fast it appears as if he’s in two places at once, performing two different actions or flowing from one action to the next. The entire process occurs so quickly, he’s hardly even aware of the dimension he travels through. Visually, Kurt’s teleports resemble a smoke trick. Whenever he teleports, it looks like he instantly vaporizes into or from a brief puff of blue or black smoke or gas, and causes a faint scent of burning brimstone. The vapor and scent are actually a small portion of the dimension’s atmosphere, escaping as he disappears into it and reappears from it when he teleports.

In his own words, Kurt can teleport ā€œas far as I can see, or if I’ve been there before.ā€ Basically, so long as he knows where he’s going, Nightcrawler can teleport anywhere. Additionally, he can move during his teleportation, enabling him to reappear in a very different pose or position than he was in when he disappeared. Though he can teleport to wherever he wants, this is caveated by his distance limitation. Nightcrawler is able to teleport distances of up to two miles (3 km) under optimal conditions, although this is usually his outer limit. Trying to teleport beyond this distance or making these long jumps repeatedly can cause him to become severely fatigued. Though he can exceed this limit through severe strain, it leaves him drained and more often than not, unconscious upon reappearing. So, while he can teleport towards a location that’s more than two miles away, he does so by making multiple jumps so as to avoid overexerting himself.

Interestingly, his comic counterpart has noted teleporting between north and south along Earth's magnetic field lines is easier than teleporting between east and west against them; likewise, he mentioned making a vertical teleportation upwards is both difficult and dangerous, since he’s fighting against both the electromagnetic and gravitational fields. All said, this gave Kurt’s comic counterpart, a range of 2 miles east-to-west, up to 3 miles north-to-south, and 1 mile vertically upwards (by pushing himself to his physical limits) when he makes teleportation jumps. So far, Kurt hasn’t mentioned his teleportation being affected by direction, but since he hasn’t been shown teleporting very long distances either, this is a good range for him to deal with as well.

Nightcrawler can also teleport additional mass with him, usually other people and/or things, though the limits to the mass he can carry while teleporting, and the limits to the distance he can teleport with the additional load is unknown. However, a general rule is: the greater the mass, the more effort he exerts to teleport it, since teleporting mass other than himself and his clothing adds additional strain to his body. He’s most comfortable teleporting up to two people with him a short distance (nearby and within eyesight).

Kurt possesses some degree of control over whether he teleports whatever’s in contact with him when he jumps. He was shown teleporting his teammates multiple times, but not the ground (or jet) they were standing on. During these jumps, he teleported their clothes and one point, a medical kit Jean was holding, suggesting that he chooses what comes with him when he teleports. Conversely, when he and Raven were fleeing the fight club, a guard grabbed them right before Nightcrawler teleported, and the guard was brought along as well, surprising Kurt. Later, when Angel grabbed his tail, he frantically teleported several times to escape, but always took Angel with him since he was still holding onto his tail. This suggest that so long as someone is in physical contact with Nightcrawler, they will be teleported with him, treating both people as ā€œone mass,ā€ but items touching him before a teleport may or may not come along for the ride depending on his concentration.

His power automatically displaces liquids and gases when he arrives, enabling him to teleport into water or air without risking damage to himself by ā€œstrikingā€ space occupied by liquid or gas. Teleporting also doesn’t diminish Kurt’s velocity or momentum; he arrives going the same speed he was going when he left. For example, if he were falling from a great height, he couldn’t teleport himself towards the ground in order to save himself. If he did, he would land with the same velocity that he teleported with—Wowzah, that’s a Splat.

To counter this, since he can choose the direction he’s facing when he teleports, Nightcrawler can teleport and reappear facing away from the ground. His velocity would then propel him upward, effectively slowing him down as gravity takes hold again. Repeatedly teleporting himself short distances ā€œupwardsā€ like this eventually subtracts his inertia and decreases his velocity to a safe level (as though taking two steps back for every one forward). Once he’s slowed down enough, he can then teleport to the ground without harm.

Nightcrawler's teleports place a certain strain on his body and endurance, similar to any motion a body makes, like moving an arm or running. More importantly, however, teleporting also places a strain on the endurance of any passengers he’s carrying. Most people he teleports multiple times with—especially those who are non-teleporters—show signs of disorientation and physical weakness when they reappear, since they normally have no experience with weathering the strain of regular teleportation.

Thus, one of Kurt’s main combat tactics is to grab his opponent and make a series of rapid jumps with them, leaving the opponent severely confused and debilitated, sometimes even to the point of losing consciousness. The strain of these "multiple ports" can exhaust foes without superhuman endurance while Nightcrawler himself remains strong enough to continue fighting. Using repeated teleports, he was capable of repositioning himself and Angel until he exhausted his adversary and left him trapped in a tangle of concrete and steel debris. Though Angel was able to eventually recover, Nightcrawler's teleports fatigued the winged warrior long enough for Kurt break away and accomplish his mission.

• Conscious Spatial Awareness

Normally, Kurt only teleports to places that he can currently see clearly, or places he is familiar with or has seen in the past. This is because there’s a very real risk of telefragging, or reappearing within a solid object. For example, if he teleported into a place where a pipe was occupying the same space as his reappearing leg, he would end up with the pipe impaled through his leg, an event that happened to him when he was child just discovering his abilities. Worse cases of telefragging would cause severe injury or even death.

To offset this risk, Nightcrawler possesses a subconscious, extrasensory ā€œspatial awarenessā€ when teleporting into an area, particularly useful when he jumps to an area he is not looking at or has no knowledge/memory of. This ability unconsciously warns his body of other mass located in the same space he’s reappearing, thus preventing him from teleporting into solid objects within his immediate vicinity or avoiding the risk of reappearing in walls or below ground when he teleports. Were he to blindly teleport into the above-mentioned space with the pipe, his mind would sense the threating mass and automatically move his leg to avoid the pipe on instinct.

His spatial awareness works instantly in real-time, meaning it allows him to teleport and reappear without materializing into an object that was moved between his disappearance and reappearance. This is particularly useful when he teleports into a place with moving people, as he can avoid reappearing inside a person who moved into what used to be open space a second ago. An additional side-effect to this ability, Nightcrawler has also exhibited a limited ability to sense the teleportation of other beings

All of this also applies to whatever additional mass he’s carrying, preventing him from teleporting a passenger or delivery into a solid object. Now, that’s not to say he can’t do so, something an opponent should keep in mind if they grab him. When Angel literally had Nightcrawler by the tail during their battle, he was brought along with every teleport since Kurt couldn’t escape the winged warrior’s grasp. To finally get away, the blue mutant deliberately teleported just outside a hollow pile of debris, leaving his tail and Angel’s arm threaded through a cage of rebar. This left Apocalypse’s horseman trapped inside (it still took knocking Angel out to get him to let go). Despite the potential effectiveness of this technique, Kurt’s gentle nature inhibits him from maiming or injuring an opponent in this way and thus he hardly ever utilizes the ability to harmful effects.

• Shadow Camouflage

Kurt has a limited ability to blend into dark shadow due to the color of his skin and hair. The dimension he travels through when teleporting also has some addition to this, be it remnants of the portal always lingering around his body absorbing photons or just his general connection to the light-bending attributes of the dimension. For clarity, ā€œdark shadowā€ would be akin to an unlit room across the hall, not the shade of a tree outside. When he’s hidden in the darkness, making him out is almost impossible even if he’s moving, as his clothes also adapt this camouflage.

Only his yellow eyes can give him away since they glow in the dark, forcing him to be careful about where he’s facing when he’s camouflaged. As a tradeoff, however, Kurt has a marked degree of heightened night vision as well.

An interesting side-effect of his teleportation creating smoky clouds, is that by teleporting rapidly in an enclosed (and presumably unventilated) area, Nightcrawler can create what appear to be gaseous, three-dimensional ā€œshadowsā€ that eventually fill and cover the space. This gives him the advantage of both blinding his opponents and masking his own motions in the swirling air, making it easier to grab an opponent and haul them into the shadows for some close-quarters combat. However, since these shadows are vapor-based, ventilation or other winds can easily blow them away.

While Kurt’s mutation granted him several powers, it also mutated his body, making it very obvious to others he’s a mutant. Unlike his powers, his mutated biology was readily apparent at birth, leading to his mother abandoning him and his subsequent rescue by his foster parents. Kurt lived his whole life with his mutations, which made his work at the circus easy, but his life as a ā€œnormalā€ person very difficult. Still, his mutations enabled him to greatly hone his skills in circus acrobatics, ultimately making him a naturally-gifted acrobat and, if need be, a dangerous opponent. His mutations include a blue skin, yellow eyes, pointed ears, canine fangs, a prehensile tail, three-fingered hands and two-toed feet, adhesive pads on his hands and feet, and superhuman flexibility and physical abilities.

• Prehensile Tail

Nightcrawler was born with a long, prehensile tail, approximately 4 ft (1.2 m), which allows him to grab onto objects with ease, akin to a whip or snake. Since he was born with it, Kurt grew up with it as part of his biology and utilizes it as deftly and instinctively as he uses his arms and legs. Even though he’s quite conscious about where his tail is in relation to himself and others, sometimes (like anyone’s arms or legs) he can whack someone with it on accident when passing by. His tail is surprisingly strong, able to not only support his body weight, but also lift an adult human completely off the ground at the same time. Nightcrawler can use his tail as a brace and lean against it to support himself, as a tether to catch onto something and either anchor himself with it or hang from it, and can even spin on his tail like a dance move.

Nightcrawler’s tail ends in a large, arrowhead-shaped tip, sometimes called a talon, stinger, or spade. It’s deft enough to fight with like a sword or blunt weapon and sharp enough to be a stabbing weapon. Granted, Kurt can’t truly clash against bladed edges with his tail’s tip since it’s still flesh, however he can deflect strikes by slapping it against the side of the object or battering an opponent’s body with it. Similarly, while he can use it as a stabbing weapon, he can’t pierce some of the thicker bones in a human body with it and would have to go for a softer area (between the ribs or under the sternum, for example). But again, due to his pacifistic attitude, Nightcrawler avoids injuring someone in a fatal manner like this and usually goes for poking a tender point or stabbing a hand or foot to throw them off balance or make them drop their weapon. Interestingly, despite its sharpness, the tip is still incredibly flexible; Kurt wrapped it around the handle of a knife and molded it to hold the side and rim of a cup, changing its shape and rigidity via muscle contraction.

One of the biggest drawbacks to his tail is that it’s obviously still attached to him. Using his tail to attack or grab someone renders Nightcrawler vulnerable to grapples if his opponent predicts him or has fast enough reactions. After Angel dodged and grabbed the teleporter’s tail, he proceeded to attack Kurt while keeping him in close range by the impromptu tether. This also prevented Nightcrawler from teleporting away from him, as Angel was ā€œconnectedā€ to him via his grip on his tail. It also puts Kurt in a strange position, since any good yank is going to try to force him to present his back or trip him if his tail’s between or under his legs. Thankfully his tail’s strong enough to weather hard pulls, seen when Nightcrawler deliberately yanked his tail clean out of Angel’s grip and simultaneously knocked the horseman out by banging his head into the rebar cage, not showing any worse for wear afterwards.

• Surface Adhesion

While Nightcrawler can be found dangling from his tail or using it to hold onto an anchor point, he can also cling to solid surfaces, such as walls and ceilings, via his hands and feet. Kurt was born with microscopic suction discs covering the surfaces of his hands and feet, enabling him to stick to objects on instinct and release them with the same ease. This ability enables him to scale the sides of buildings, crawl across ceilings, and support himself on otherwise ill-suited structures due to not having to lock his entire body weight onto one point. It also makes it easier for him to grip things in his hands and feet, thus making it harder for an opponent to yank something from his grasp.

Though he normally sticks to surfaces for support, Nightcrawler can run on any solid surface without losing speed, provided he defies gravity with his momentum and generally only does so by moving on all fours. When fighting with Angel, he was able to teleport and land on a supporting beam without wobbling and a moment later, dodge around the beam akin to a snake coiling around a branch. Additionally, while he was teleporting around Apocalypse’s pyramid after Angel’s assault, Kurt stuck to walls and stayed in the shadows to prevent another surprise attack. This combined with his power to blend in with the shadows and teleport makes him extremely skilled at espionage and stealth missions. However, it also makes it impractical for him to wear gloves or boots while fighting, thus his X-Man uniform deliberately leaves him barehanded and barefoot so he can make use of his adhesive grip.

• Superhuman Physical Abilities

Apart from his tail and the adhesive surfaces of his hands and feet, Nightcrawler’s mutations have granted him unique physiology and several superhuman physical abilities. He developed these abilities through his time at the circus and is now honing through training with the X-Men. Nightcrawler's agility, balance, coordination, dexterity, endurance, flexibility, reflexes, resilience, speed, and stamina are all enhanced to levels well beyond the human body's natural limits. Notably, although Kurt’s teleportation can be blocked or inhibited via different superhuman/natural or technological methods (sometimes called getting ā€œdepoweredā€), his superhuman physical mutations, including his tail and surface adhesion, aren’t so easily suppressed and remain with him even if depowered, bar severe biochemical breakdown or disruptions of his mutant genes.

• Superhuman Agility: Nightcrawler’s agility far surpasses that of an Olympic-level gymnast. He can change his body’s position and coordinate his bodily movement more efficiently than what is naturally possible for others. As agility is a combination of balance, coordination, speed, reflexes, strength, and endurance, he can perform maneuvers that appear almost impossible. His enhanced agility allows Kurt to balance on flagpoles, scale broken walls of an unknown structure, bounce off one opponent to the next, all the while quickly dodging attempts to impeded him, and even fight opponents in midair, among other superhuman feats. Combined with his teleportation, he can progress through intense obstacle courses and battlefields without issue. However, despite his impressive agility, Nightcrawler is still limited to his physical body and his mental alertness and he can only push his agility to certain levels without injuring himself.

• Superhuman Balance: Nightcrawler possesses a supernatural level of balance compared to most of his teammates, because his sensory organs (eyes and ears) and the proprioceptive organs in his joints are naturally perfectly coordinated. His ability to maintain equilibrium when stationary or moving simply means he’s doesn’t fall over or wobble regardless of what action he performs. Since he can retain the center of his mass above the base of whatever support he’s on (static balance), even while moving (dynamic balance), Kurt can achieve feats such as crouching on the end of a beam without teetering, hanging upside down and not getting dizzy, dodging objects with superior finesse, and being incapable of succumbing to vertigo, nausea, disorientation, and the effects of weightlessness. However, he can still be thrown off balance by sensory-based attacks, such as loud noises, blinding lights, or numbness, disorienting him for a bit until he recovers.

• Superhuman Dexterity: Nightcrawler dexterity is drastically more advanced than what would be considered ā€œnormalā€ in his world. Dexterity is another word for fine-motor skills, which means he naturally coordinates the small muscles of his body with his eyes when making movements—movements that usually involve the synchronization of his hands and fingers. Due to his mutations, Kurt also possesses high levels of dexterity with his toes and his tail, able to grasp and move things with his feet and tail as easily as he can with his fingers and hands. This makes him immensely better at controlling his limbs, muscles, and digits than regular beings, despite the way his mutations shaped his extremities. He can write and type without a problem, climb across almost any surface, and even perform small, technical repairs or medical procedures if required. As he’s also equally proficient with his tail, it’s not uncommon to see Kurt holding items with it, including a cup (leaving his hands free to hold his book), a knife (leaving his hands and feet free to keep his opponent pinned), and other items, as naturally as someone would hold them in their hands.

• Superhuman Endurance: Nightcrawler can endure a good deal beyond what is naturally possible for an extended amount of time. He can work and survive longer without supplies, resources, energy, or other items, generally far longer than regular beings. However, his endurance isn’t as superhuman compared to some of his other teammates, especially those whose mutant abilities are more geared towards augmenting their endurance. Rather, while Kurt’s endurance is somewhat enhanced by his mutations, most of his endurance comes from being trained to endure. This includes his earlier life in Germany, which was implied to be less than stellar—he mentioned waiting hours in line for bread—despite him working and performing in a circus troupe daily, and his new life in America, where he trains with the other X-Men to be operational despite enduring harsh environments or situations. He still has limitations on how much stress he can take, and despite being a mutant, is still ā€œonly humanā€ who requires rest, water, food, and health to continue functioning at his peak.

• Superhuman Flexibility: Nightcrawler's bone structure, muscle and joints have more elastic strength and durability than normal humans, granting him great flexibility beyond what is naturally possible. This allows him to perform gymnastic and contortionist-type feats without damaging his bones. He can bend and twist his body far beyond the natural limits of normal physiology and in ways normal people are not meant to, albeit only from the joints. Because of Kurt extreme hypermobility, he can move his body parts in nigh-impossible ways, enabling him to fit through spaces previously thought impassable (including squeezing through air ducts and crawlspaces) and escape from holdings that were supposed to keep him trapped (such as being tied up or caged). Additionally, his joints and specifically his spine are far more adaptive to remaining bent than normal humans, so he can remain in a crouched position for a long time without injuring himself. However, despite his flexibility, he can only bend from the joints and spine; his other bones stay as rigid as ever.

• Superhuman Parkour: Nightcrawler is unnaturally talented in parkour due to his mutated biology, allowing him to overcome physical obstacles, such as walls, gaps, and other barriers with ease, all without losing much—if any—momentum or speed. Environments of almost any kind are easily maneuverable for him and he can perform almost impossible parkour feats at speeds and in places that would be dangerous for others to perform them. This includes running and jumping on any surface, whether fragile, uneven, slippery, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, narrow, small, moving, accelerating, rotating, floating, shaking and so on.

This also factors into his movements while teleporting, as Kurt can transition from running to grabbing an opponent to dropping said opponent on another person and escaping or attacking again all within the span of a second or two by chaining these actions through his teleports. He displayed this during his fight with Angel, when he went from balancing atop a beam to instantly crouching behind the winged mutant with his tail around Angel’s neck via one teleport. This allows him to not only keep his momentum, but also prepare the best position for his next maneuver while moving and teleporting.

• Superhuman Reflexes: Nightcrawler reflexes and reaction time/speed are enhanced to a point greater than what is naturally possible, enabling him to react faster than normal worldly standards. His reflexes let him react to gunfire almost immediately and either dodge or teleport before his opponent can shoot at him. When a guard came upon Kurt, Jean, and Scott while they were exploring the base, Kurt teleported both Jean and Scott out of the room, one at a time, before the guard was able to shoot them. His reflexes and training enable him to predict attacks and dodge weapons based on aim, effortlessly avoiding even automatic fire. His reflexes appear to be equal to and greater than many other mutants and he can decisively teleport and/or evade around any battlefield.

A subset of this, Nightcrawler possesses what’s known as ā€œsensorimotor synchronyā€, which means a synchronization between his mind and body, or in simple terms, his body can match the speed of his mind. While he can’t move at the speed of thought, his body can keep up with his mind and act/move at the same time a thought is formed without delay between action/movement. When his mind thinks, his body acts at the same time, and may complete or near completion of his action at the same time his thought is fully formed. However, even with his enhanced reflexes, if the object he’s trying to dodge is simply faster than his ability to move, he may still get hit with it. Additionally, if his mind or body is inhibited in some way, his ability to move reflexively can be hampered.

• Superhuman Speed: Nightcrawler can naturally move faster than normal humans, due to his mutated biology and training, but he doesn’t possess ā€œsuperhuman speedā€ like other mutants such as Quicksilver. However, because of his ability to near-instantaneously teleport, he can simulate the same effects (or at least the results) of superspeed. When Kurt rescued Professor X from Apocalypse, Nightcrawler’s teleport was shown from his perspective: he and Xavier appeared to be travelling through a wormhole-like shadow from one location to the next.

While the time between disappearing and reappearing was almost a single second, for Nightcrawler it appeared (or felt like) like three seconds. This gives him plenty of time to move and prepare between disappearing and reappearing, making it seem like his speed is superhuman since he can accomplish multiple things in a few seconds when they would take others several. He went from running on the floor to clinging to the wall to jumping off a ledge to falling through the air during his second battle with Angel all within the span of a second or two.

• Superhuman Resilience: Nightcrawler has better resilience than what is naturally possible; particularly useful is his natural resistance to the strain of his own teleports. Since most others don’t possess the same resistance, continuously teleporting with passengers (or opponents) quickly weakens them via disorientation and mental whiplash/vertigo, ultimately sapping their strength and leaving them incapacitated. However, his resiliency to his teleports does have its limits. While he can comfortably teleport up to two people shorter distance without a problem, teleporting a group of people severely taxes him; even if successful, it knocks him out once he reappears.

He also has a higher tolerance for pain and some resistance against physical hits, shown during his fights against Angel. During their first fight, despite being repeatedly electrocuted by the cage, Kurt was able to continually avoid Angel’s attacks with acrobatic maneuvers and teleports, showing little sign of fatigue. During their second fight, Angel surprised him from behind and rammed him at full speed face-first into a stone wall, whereupon Nightcrawler instantly teleported and tried to attack his opponent without any sign of disorientation. Still, if he is injured, he’ll eventually be forced to rest and receive medical attention, as he’s not as physically durable as some of his bulkier teammates.

• Superhuman Stamina: Nightcrawler also has better stamina and energy than what is naturally possible, able to exert himself for long periods without tiring. His endurance is noted in both his resistance to injury and to his ability to teleport without showing signs of strain that others show. He was capable of teleporting repeatedly during battle, and despite his fight with Angel taking them both for an intense aerial tumble, Kurt showed no signs of exhaustion. In fact, he showed some enhanced mental stamina as he was able to formulate a plan to trap Angel in the surrounding debris even while teleporting and being physically manhandled by the winged mutant.

He was also able to teleport himself and Raven from Berlin, Germany to New York, United States overnight, though the number of teleports and exactly how long this took is unknown (presumably only a few hours, as it was fast enough Raven decided they didn’t need an airplane). He recovers from overexerting his stamina rather quickly, as even when his energy was drained completely by teleporting all his teammates at once, Nightcrawler was only unconscious for under half an hour. Due to his training with the X-Men, he’s been improving his stamina and can sustain himself without tiring longer than peak human ability, making his stamina superhuman. Regardless, he doesn’t have infinite supply and he can only exert himself for so long before the excessive buildup of fatigue toxins begins to wear him down.

"QUOTE"

With his mutant powers and mutated biology, combined with his years of growing up and performing in a circus troupe, Kurt is an exceptionally-skilled acrobat and martial artist. Many have referred to him as a naturally-gifted fighter and thanks to the combination of his powers and abilities, both natural and trained, he’s a very dangerous opponent if he has to fight. However, despite his ironic aptitude at violence, Nightcrawler is a steadfast pacifist who only fights when he’s forced to protect himself or someone he cares about. Kurt’s primary abilities are his mastery of acrobatics and martial arts, but also a few some supplementary skills including bilingualism and his new academics at Xavier’s school.

• Master Acrobat

Growing up in a circus, Nightcrawler was able to use his naturally-gifted body and athleticism to become an extremely-talented acrobat and contortionist. Because of his flexibility, coordination, and other heightened traits, Kurt was trained to entertain the audience with daring feats of gymnastics and agility. Eventually becoming a gifted performer and showman, he did both solo acts and group acts with other circus members. In his solo acts, he contended with challenging obstacle courses, containing apparatuses like hoops to jump through, poles to balance on, ropes to ascend upside down or descend head first, cages to maneuver through, and pillars to jump between. His group acts included trapeze artistry, tightrope walking, ball balancing, leaping through rings of fire, and dodging throwing knives.

His superior speed, power, quickness, and other various acrobatic abilities made him the star of the show and earned him the title of ā€œThe Incredible Nightcrawler.ā€ Because of his training, Nightcrawler can perform acrobatic and gymnastic feats far beyond what is considered naturally possible, including handsprings, somersaults, twists, and vaults, using whatever surface he needs to (people included). His flexibility and contortionism enable him to reach and fit in places others cannot, as well as wrap around opponents to restrain them or attack blind spots even while being held himself. However, he is still limited in his acrobatics to his physical body and can only push himself to certain thresholds without overextending or overexerting himself to the point of self-harm.

Even after leaving the circus, Kurt is still one of—if not the most—acrobatic members of the current X-Men and regularly uses his skills during training, combat, and even down time. When fighting Angel, he made use of his acrobatics to dodge the winged mutant’s attacks, including crawling around a support beam like a snake and threading between his opponent’s legs to avoid him. Later, while relaxing at the X-Mansion, Quicksilver surprised him and Nightcrawler instinctively teleported onto the room’s chandelier, hanging upside down by his feet and tail, before quickly flipping off and effortlessly landing back on his feet. Sometimes he’ll take a more acrobatic position while hanging out with his friends, such as balancing on the back of the couch or sitting curled and cross-legged in a chair while everyone else is sitting or standing in more normal positions. He usually does this out of comfort or to stretch more than any conscious desire to show off.

• Master Hand-to-Hand-Combatant

Despite his pacifistic and timid side, Nightcrawler is an ironically talented fighter and skilled hand-to-hand combatant who can easily hold his own against most adversaries. Though he was somewhat safe from mutant hatred while he grew up in the circus, Kurt experienced enough persecution from instances outside the circus that he began to instinctively combine his acrobatic expertise and his mutant powers into an effective self-defense martial art practice. Normally, he refuses to fight unless it’s absolutely necessary, usually to protect himself or someone else. But when he does, he’s a fearsome opponent with both courage and aggression fueling his actions.

While his peaceful nature suggests he didn’t voluntarily practice combat with the intent to pick fights or cause harm, others have noted that he’s ā€œa naturalā€ when it comes to fighting. When he was forced into a cage match against Angel, a highly-skilled mutant cage fighter on an eleven-point winning streak, Kurt stubbornly avoided combating the winged man, relying on dodges and teleports to keep away from him. However, once Angel revealed they’d both be killed if they didn’t fight, the frustrated teleporter summoned up his courage and aggressively attacked his opponent with a swift teleport and cage slam, incapacitating one of Anel’s wings in a single move, to the shock of the crowd and Angel’s anger.

When he fights, Nightcrawler uses his acrobatics and his mutant powers in tandem with each other. One of his main tactics is grabbing his opponent and making several fast teleports, leaving them too weak and disoriented to keep fighting due to the inherent strain of the teleportation (which Kurt is resistant too). If that doesn’t work, his preferred method of martial arts involved grappling, usually by quickly teleporting behind his opponent and grabbing them. Most of the time he’ll try to appear and attempt to grab their wrists with his hands or their ankles with his feet. Because of the adhesive surfaces of his hands and feet, he can get a much better grip on his opponent, provided they’re wearing something he can adhere to (suction discs don’t work much at all on normal skin).

Once he has a hold of his opponent, Kurt can either wait for them to give up while fighting their attempts to get free, attempt to trip them or pull them off balance, or throw them. If he opts to throw someone, he usually teleports them both first, reappearing with his opponent close to the surface, similar to his attack on Angel during their fight. Since his teleportation keeps his momentum, he can throw someone against a surface at top speed by eliminating the distance between them and the impact. Additionally, Kurt can make full-speed tackles and use physical blows from a distance, since he can teleport himself right next to a distant opponent. By combining teleporting, grapples, and physical blows, Nightcrawler can be almost a nightmare for groups to face, since he can attack and disappear before anyone can react, which usually leads to a group panic and thus making his assault even easier for him.

Kurt often uses his tail in battle—both the length and the tip—in conjunction with his teleporting and other limbs, as seen during both his battles with Angel. During their fight, Nightcrawler caught the winged mutant off guard by teleporting behind him, wrapped his tail around his neck, and pulled Angel off his feet into a teleported slam against the electrified cage. During his second battle, when Angel got the drop on him, Kurt again teleported behind him and attempted to—surprisingly—stab Angel in the face with his tail’s tip (or catch him by the neck again), but the Horseman caught his tail before he could strike him.

In some respects, his tail is faster than his arms and legs and is noticeably more dexterous. During battles, Kurt frequently uses his tail to catch his opponents around the neck, wrists, or ankles when they’re focused elsewhere, either opting to strangle them or trip them. Having a fifth limb is a huge advantage in a fight for him, as he can keep all his opponent’s limbs occupied and still attack them (obviously providing they only have four limbs in the first place). Though Kurt won’t use his tail’s arrowhead-shaped tip for fatal attacks, he can still deliver a powerful stab in close quarters with it, seen when he tried to stab Angel in to face during their second fight.

Since being rescued from Germany and becoming an X-Man, Kurt has begun to train for battle more officially with the rest of the X-Men. More tactical martial arts among the training regimen aim to hone his raw natural talent for fighting into something more streamlined and defined, in addition to the hit-and-run or teleport-and-grapple tactics he used before. An important part of the training includes fighting without utilizing his teleporting powers, preparing him to hold his own in case he’s suppressed or depowered during a battle. This sees more use of his acrobatics and agility in addition to punches, kicks, elbows, knees, body throws, and other martial arts maneuvers. Kurt’s comic counterpart is very skilled wielding two or three swords (rapiers and sabers) at once, and can fence with either hand, both feet, and his tail; while he’s not shown the talent for this yet, fencing-style swordsmanship is a skill Kurt could definitely pick up in the future.

• Bilingualism

Though his native language is German, Nightcrawler is fluent in English as well as his home tongue. His English carries a heavy accent, such as pronouncing his ā€œwh’sā€ as ā€œv’sā€ and his ā€œth’sā€ as ā€œz’s,ā€ and he sometimes slips German expressions into his speech on habit, usually when surprised, angered, or when having some fun. Due to living as a circus performer for much of his youth, it’s possible he’s also fluently multilinguistic in other European languages (such as French, Spanish, and Italian), since travelling around Europe as the star performer in a circus and knowing the language of wherever they were that week is very handy. It’s also likely he knows Romanian (due to his surrogate parents) and Latin (due to his Catholicism).

Similarly, thanks to his training as an X-Man, Kurt might be taking courses in other languages to better help him on his missions, if Professor X doesn’t simply ā€˜download’ new languages—like Russian, Japanese, and Chinese—into the X-Men’s minds for efficiency (something he does in the comics). Speaking of these, while he’s neither a demon nor an animal, he does have some animalistic traits, including his canine fangs and claws, and sometimes displays this in his vocalizations. If sufficiently annoyed, angered, or agitated, Kurt’s been shown to growl and snarl in a very feral way, lips curled and teeth bared in a threatening manner. Though he doesn’t like to do it, he can use this and his looks to his advantage if he has to intimidate someone as a last resort.

"QUOTE"

Kurt may have a wide array of mutant powers and superhuman abilities, but he’s still a human at his core despite being a mutant and is just as susceptible to disease and physical injury as any ordinary human. His powers also come with a few notable weaknesses, like many mutants, that affect him directly. Electric fields, teleportation strain, telegraphing, telefrag, telekinesis/telepathy, and biochemical disruptions can all cause detrimental effects on him, his health, and his ability to use his powers. He trains to either overcome or mitigate these weaknesses, but some are insurmountable due to their very nature. Capitalizing on them gives his opponents a good chance to defeat or entrap him.

• Electric Fields

Though unexplained as to how, if Kurt is caught in an electric field, it hinders his teleportation by limiting it to the volume of the space he’s in and makes it impossible for him to pass through the electrified field. This was most obvious during his cage fight with Angel in Germany. The cage itself was electrified and even though Kurt could teleport freely within the confines of the cage, if he tried to teleport past the electrified metal, he was instantly dragged out of his teleport and reappeared against the walls of the cage, receiving a painful electric shock for his efforts. Considering he couldn’t escape through the ceiling or through the base of the cage, it’s assumed these surfaces were electrified as well. Similarly, after he teleported into the open helicopter with Jean and Scott, once the doors shut, it formed a cage that was electrified with the flip of a switch and Kurt panicked, realizing he couldn’t escape with his friends from the confines, likening it to Berlin all over again. Once the electric field is shut off or broken, however, he can teleport through the walls or gap respectively and escape.

Though the limit of the electric field is unknown, it’s implied the electricity has to be channeling directly through the material and able to deliver an electric shock upon contact. This means Kurt couldn’t get through electrified bars as they would shock him upon touching it, but could escape through a cage made of power cords even if they were turned on, since the insulated coating would prevent any electricity from escaping and shocking him. Another speculation is that the material the electricity is running through has to be close enough together to prevent him from getting through. Meaning a wall of electrified metal mesh would prevent him from teleporting through it, but if the wall had a wide hole torn through it, Kurt could pass through and escape even if the rest of the wall was still electrified. Enclosing him in electricity is the main method for blocking his teleportation, thus he fears being entrapped in metal enclosures of any kind.

• Teleportation Strain

Kurt’s teleportation, despite its great utility, naturally puts a strain on his body. Teleporting is an action for him just like moving an arm or running around; It takes some of his energy and stamina to trigger each jump and minute amounts continue to leak out throughout the process, akin to someone using air to hold a long note or using stamina to continue running. Eventually he’ll run out and automatically reappear regardless of whether he wants to or not, which can be potentially very dangerous for him. While he has a natural resilience to the strain of it, he’s not immune; teleportation still places a strain on his body and he has to train himself to be able to use his powers to greater degrees.

Kurt’s teleports are generally limited by two things: distance and mass. The further away the location Kurt teleports to or the larger the mass he teleports with him, and the harder and more exhausting it is for him to make the teleportation "jump." When it comes to teleporting, the more effort he has to exert, the greater he risks injuring himself by straining his body. A mass of three average-size people and their clothes (himself included) is generally a comfortable amount for him to jump a relatively good distance. However, despite his proficiency in teleportation, Nightcrawler is still developing and training his powers and as such, he can’t teleport a group of people without risking extreme exhaustion or fatigue.

When he teleported himself and seven others, it took him several flickering seconds of intense strain to finally dissipate the group and make the teleport happen, and he not only crash-landed the group nearby but collapsed unconscious the moment they all reappeared, completely drained. Because of this, Kurt usually only teleports shorter distances when he’s moving larger masses. If he’s going a long distance, he’ll take a longer breather in ratio to the distance he teleported. However, by himself or with a light load, Kurt can cover a fairly impressive distance with a teleport, considering he made it from Berlin, Germany to New York, America in only a few hours while taking Raven with him.

• Telefragging

The main, inherent danger to teleporting is that Kurt must be able to visualize where he is teleporting; otherwise, he could end up in a dangerous position, such as materializing inside solid matter such as a wall or underground or with some foreign object stuck through him. Depending on the amount of his body materializing within the solid matter, this can obviously cause serious injury or death. However, because he has to picture where he’s teleporting to do so without real risk, Kurt usually only teleports to places he can directly see (in line-of-sight), to places he’s been before and has memories of, or to places he knows the layout of. Trying to teleport to a place he can’t see or doesn’t know would be making a ā€œblindā€ jump and carry the intrinsic risk of telefragging.

Kurt’s extrasensory spatial awareness when teleporting instantly alerts and moves his body instinctively away from anything that might be ā€œinā€ his body’s space when reappearing. This prevents him from teleporting into solid objects within his immediate vicinity. This awareness also allows him to track his movements subconsciously and with greater precision than the average person, helping him pinpoint locations for a "blind" teleport if he has to make one. He can somewhat overcome the danger of a blind jump if he can visualize his unknown destination in mind, meaning he can teleport past an obstacle if he can imagine what’s past it. An example being, if he’s never been inside room 1, but room 2 beside it is visible and has similar layout to room 1, he can teleport into room 1 by imagining what’s past the door. Similarly, if someone can describe for him what’s beyond the obstacle, he can teleport there based on the description.

However, despite this ability being instinctive and internal, it diminishes the greater the distance he teleports, making him prefer shorter jumps than longer ones if he’s jumping to an unknown location. His spatial awareness can be disrupted by psychic interference or inebriation via alcohol, drugs, or poisons. Because of this, if Kurt is under the influence of something deliberating or his powers are malfunctioning, he may choose not to teleport to an unknown location to avoid the risk of injuring himself. Regardless, teleportation carries the risk any time he makes of jump, so if he’s under some kind of inhibiting influence, he’ll only ever does a blind teleport if the situation is life or death critical.

• Telegraphing

Contrary to Kurt’s comic counterpart, he doesn’t make the classic ā€œBAMF!ā€ sound when teleporting; instead, a unique hissing rattle (akin to a sped-up rattlesnake) sounds for half a second right before he disappears or reappears, and culminates in an airy ā€˜snap’ sound when he actually teleports (the snap being the sound of imploding air rushing to fill the space Nightcrawler’s body was just occupying). Superhumans with heightened senses have a split-second time window to hear the audio cue and realize he’s about to teleport, which they can potentially act on.

However, due to the sheer speed of his teleportation, the fact that physically catching him before he teleports won’t stop him (and result in his grabber getting dragged along for the disorienting ride), and the other person has no idea ā€œwhereā€ in the area Kurt will reappear or what position he’ll be in when he does, this weakness is only really exploitable by beings with superhuman speed or reaction times, as well as beings who can control time or preconceive the future. Similarly, those same superhumans with heightened senses may also sense a slight atmospheric change when Kurt teleports, due to the brief escape of the alternate dimension’s atmosphere when he teleports.

• Telekinesis/Telepathy

Because Kurt controls his teleportation with his conscious mind, both via mentally triggering an unknown biochemical/biophysical reaction and acting on the location he’s picturing in his head, powerful-enough psychics can use either telepathy or telekinesis to prevent him from teleporting, as well as completely lock him in place. Telepaths can either prevent him from picturing a location or settling on one, thus forcing him to risk making a blind jump. They can also inject an image of a specific jump point into his head and thus manipulate him into jumping to a location of their choosing. Or they can simply ā€œconvinceā€ him not to teleport away at all. But all of them need to be strong enough to consciously suppress instinctive reactions.

Additionally, if he does manage to teleport, any mental connection to his mind is severed. Even Professor X stressed he was unable to keep a lock on Kurt while he kept teleporting. Once he reappears, mental links can be reestablished after relocating him. Provided he doesn’t teleport again. Telekinetics who can fine-tune their powers enough to prevent biological reactions within a person’s body can prevent his teleporting by suppressing whatever reaction he uses to teleport. However, since it’s unknown what he does to trigger it, this isn’t likely to be feasible unless it’s a life-threatening freezing of all biological functions. Thus, psychics who can perform both telepathy and telekinesis can lock him down if they’re strong enough.

• "Depowering"

In Kurt’s world, mutations are caused by the X-Gene, a genetic biological factor caused by saltation that causes them to be born with and/or develop superhuman powers, traits, and abilities. Because mutant powers are created biologically, mutants are often treated as ā€œdiseasedā€ humans and efforts are continually made to ā€œcureā€ them of their mutations. This obviously creates tension in the mutant population, as those whose powers are beneficial and/or unapparent deem a ā€œcureā€ insulting, while those whose powers are detrimental and/or readily apparent (and often disfiguring) see the ā€œcureā€ as a blessing.

Kurt is proud of his mutation due to his personality and his religion, and would never take such a cure. However, his mutation is still biological and while it may not ever be able to be fully eradicated, it can still be suppressed by biochemically disrupting of his genes. If this happens, he’ll lose access to his teleportation and, if severe enough, can even have his mutated body return to normal human, essentially becoming a normal human again. So far, the only ā€œcureā€ in his world currently was proven to be temporary, but the risk of medical, chemical, or even supernatural depowering remains for Kurt as with all his world’s mutants.
